1923...THE YEAR OF FACTION

Chicago is growing in the ascetics of the era which was developing from the remnants of what was and what was about to come.  It is in a transitional period that this town was "tottling" from its roots to the liberation of a moving and cosmopolitan center.  People were coming from across the country to partake of the free spirited movement of this cultured city.  The party had started and the Malrose family was not missing a moment of this excitement.  In 1923, Grandma Alice Catherine Cellos, was busy working at the Railroad Station accepting tickets.  I only have a picture of her when she was older which she was not at this time.  I will also place a picture of Sally's father, Harry (Henry Brown) Cellos.  This picture is of him when he was younger and they were still together and in love.  So the age of the parents doesn't match up with their pictures for this time period exactly.  Sally deeply loved her father but as a traveling salesman and he was gone a lot and one time he didn't come home anymore.  This was very hard on the young family and Sally, (Colma Cellos Malrose) waited on a certain corner year after year as her father had promised to meet her there on her birthday.  She waited but he never came.  They were wild times and Harry had decided to stay in Saint Louis, Missouri.  The parents were never divorced.  And when Harry meet with a fatal fall down the stairs on Christmas Eve, it was his wife Catherine that went and took care of his burial arrangement. My mother, Gloria Alice, said that her grandmother had a great sense of humor and was friendly and caring to all those she knew.

The times were not only changing in Chicago but around the world as well.  But as easy times grew, the more divided people became.  Factions and division were occurring rapidly and would soon change history for the worse.  Leading to the ferocious times of the 20th Century.  There were many factors that figured into such change in values and morals.  But one significant reason for the transition was the ease and wealth that began to be available to more people.  During more affluent times people have time to relax standards of tradition.

It was on 1 January 1923, when Russia became the USSR which was the Union of Socialist Soviet Republics.  Lenin had just written his "Political Testament" which called for the removal of STALIN...(if only that had come to pass then 10-20 million people would not have been killed).

Racism and hatred began to grow everywhere.  The Ku Klux Klan attacked a black residential area in Florida killing 8.

In Germany the first Reich Party, which was the National Socialist Germans Workers Party...also known as the NAZI's, held their first election 28 January 1928.

The Fascists under Mussolini formed a militia in Italy.  So we see 3 major socialist organizations taking their beginning shape and starting to organize simultaneously. So what was it about 1923 that the seeds of totalitarian regimes all started at the same time?  Do people get bored in times of peace and loosen their standards and are then ripe for a dictator to take the control and return society to order?  Only further study and the future of history will answer such questions.
